California overtime law

What are the new overtime regulations in California for 2024-25?

California—The Golden State has a style all its own.  That is certainly true when it comes to calculating overtime. One of only four states that require daily overtime it also requires employees to be paid double time on a daily and weekly basis. With arguably the greatest number of requirements to pay overtime on the books of any state, processing payroll and keeping in compliance with California overtime laws and rules can be a complex situation. In addition to laws that are strictly Californian the Federal wage and hour laws may also apply. For example, California own definition of “regular rate of pay” or “workweek” is evolving with each court case but also still follows the federal. So, the person processing payroll in the state must understand not only California’s overtime requirements but the federal as well.

For 2024-2025, California overtime regulations continue to provide that non-exempt employees receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 8 hours in a day or 40 hours per week. especially Employees are entitled to be paid 1.5 times their regular rate for these overtime hours. If an employee works more than 12 hours in a day, or more than 8 hours on the seventh consecutive workday, compensation may be double the normal rate. Additionally, California’s overtime laws exceed federal standards. This is because the state of California requires exempt employees to have a higher maximum salary. That threshold will increase in 2024, requiring exempt employees to earn at least $66,560 per year, which is twice the state minimum wage for full-time positions. These improvements aim to protect workers’ rights and ensure fair compensation.
