What is Winch Strap?
Winch is a strap which is used to secure the load which is attached with the winch. A winch is attached with a trailer along with a strap which gets wound up with it which is used to pull it tightly to make the things secured properly. A winch trip usually has a hook on the one side only which gets attached with the trailer tie down strap or the chain.
What is Ratchet Strap?
A ratchet strap is a strap which has a ratchet securing mechanism on the one side of the strap but it has a hook on the both ends of the strap which is used to attach with the trailer or the strap. It is also used for securing the load like other securing products such as truck trailer seal.
Common mistakes which makes the winch straps and ratchet straps damaged are:
- Overloading the straps: The most common mistake regarding the winch straps and ratchet straps which makes them damaged are overloading the straps. When you exceed the weight which can be tolerated by the winch and ratchet straps then it puts stress on them which increases the chances of making them damaged.
- Avoid abrasion and cuts: It is also one of the common reasons which damages the winch straps and ratchet straps. Due to webbing it becomes frayed or cut from sharp metal on the strap. You can protect your straps from it by adding corner protectors and ensuring that you are not over tightening it.

- UV light exposure under Sun: When the ratchet straps or winch straps are used on the cargo then the straps come in the direct UV light of the Sun which makes its color fade away and impacts its strength also. If you keep a regular check on the straps and notice that the straps color has faded away then it is advisable to get them changed to protect from further damage.
- Age of the straps: If the straps are not correctly used or overused which means that if more stress is put on them they may not last for a longer period of time. But if they are used wisely then they may get used for at least 3-5 years. So if the straps are very old then it has higher chances to get damaged easily.
- Improper storage In- between usage: It has a great impact on the straps that are being stored In- between usage. If they are stored under some harsh conditions such as mold, mildew, sunlight and sometimes friction burns then all of these have a great impact on the straps which damage them.
So these are some common mistakes which impact the lifespan of winch straps and ratchet straps.
