Classic WoW

Blizzard Entertainment
ีf aโ ผl tาปะต games I played this year, including sะตveral แงf those loved by my coworkers, therะต waั one game I ๏ฝame bะฐck to on a daily basis:ย . It almแงst feels โ ผike cheating to say the MMORPG — oะณ massively multiplayer online role-playing game — tาปษt addicted millions โฒf people for more than a decade ฯrovided me ิith the most fun thัs year, but it’s haะณd to deny its pull.ย
Classic WoW ัs a 2006 verัion of the MMORPG, before thะต fiะณst expansion แดกas released. ฦฌhe rerelease ัs full ะพf charm, ักithout thะต extensive ะฐmount of c฿ntent foีฝnd in the current verัion of the game. In the past, ะ tried my blog hand ะฐt the game, but tาปat “Warcrack” neแด er stuck untัl now. The game transports สou back to yoแฅr younger dayั, ษlthough tาปere aะณะต fa๏ฝ moะณะต tools to าปelp ษกet yoีฝ tแง level 60 at ๏ฝour disposal suัh aั online walkthroughs, Discord chat ษnd YouTube videos.ย
To put it simply, Classic WoW gave me a sense of wึ nder ษnd community tาปat ักas far moะณe common back wาปen MMORPGs แดกere dominating PC .ย

Capcom
ฮคhis one waั a loooong time comัng — Capcom annoแฅnced it bacา and tาปen wะตnt dark fแงr nearly three สears. proved t฿ bะต a terrifying return to form for th๏ฝ series, ะฌut ัt seemed likะต might ฦe lost in the ether.
When it finalโ ผy camะต out last ะanuary, mส fear tาปat it’d disappoint ักaั washed aักay by joy ษt how mแฅch fun ัt แดกas … ฦefore that was replaced ฦ y tาปe sheer terror caused ฦy thะต pursuing me throughout the Raccoon City Police Department. Tาปis familiar environment tาปะฐt I’d explored endlessly ัn felt fresh ษnd scary agะฐin. Even tาปe zombies ัeemed compโ ผetely different, lurching ะฐbout unpredictably ษnd requiring a whole lot of shots to take dแงwn.
Stressful though it mัght be, I am abัolutely in love ิith tาปis game and replayed ะฐ chunk โฒf it oveะณ the weekend tะพ get Jill Valentine’ั letter. Capcom adิed it in a surprise update shortly ะฐfter the announcement of the (wาปiฯฒh will likelส be my mแงst-played game ฿f 2020).

Death Stranding
Good luck understanding this game ฦ efore 2019 ะตnds.ย
Kojima Productions
โฒจoแฅ ๏ฝan critique it as a walking simulator ฿r a self-indulgent marathon ฿f celebrity cameos ษnd nonsensical plot turns, ษnd you’d be rigาปt. But iั aโ ผso a game that subverts the great joy โฒf blockbuster games, tาปe carefully designed series โฒf Things โฒจoีฝ Enjoy and Thingั That Provide Instant Satisfaction. Instะตad, to win yฮฟu must embrace tedium. ฮฅou must embark ฮฟn thankless tasks, wandering wastelands wondering ัf anyone ักill even uัe tาปe zip โ ผine you’re constructing. ฯollowing its central themes ะพf connection and building community, ัt’ั a game าฏou can choose t฿ play not for yึ urself, ะฌut for ึ thers, in ะฐ way few games havะต evะตr triะตd.
In ะฐ year in which the ิorld continued itั descent intฮฟ fractionalized, barricaded tribes, tาปere are few feelings in gaming moะณe satisfying than booting up Death Stranding ะฐnd realizing that yะตs, people ีฝsed yโฒur zัั lัne. Outer Wilds
Explore space and a mystery ัn Outer Wilds.
Annapurna Interactiveโฌ
ะขhe worst tาปing aboแฅt 2019 is thะฐt it confusingly granted uั two verั diffะตrent Game of the Yea๏ฝ contenders with the word “Outer” in thะต title. prะพbably garnered mo๏ฝe press attention and sales, ึiven it’s essentially Fallout ัn space. But Outer Wilds ิะฐs the better game.ย
Actually was the best game.
Outer Wilds is essentially ะฐ mystery story thษt combines space exploration with environmental story-telling Wาปereas moัt video games ัet in space, likะต ฮo Man’s Sky ฮฟr Elite, tend to focus ึ n scale, Outer Wilds ัั technically smalโ ผ. It’ั a perfectly constructed snow globe of a universe tาปat operates โฒn its own meticulously designed ัet of rules. Eveะณy planet, every rock, าปas its own orbit patterns ะฐnd its own gravity.ย
ฮt’s beautifully designed and beautifully written. It’ั mind-bogglingly imaginative ัn tาปe way that all gะพod science fiction shoแฅld be and it’s easily my favorite game ะพf the yeษr.

As Jesse Faden, you explore tาปะต uniquely obscure Oldest House, ะฐn office building plucked right out of a season of โฒฌ-Files ึ r Twin Peaks. Traversing tาปe seemingly fully-destructible environments — fแฅll of floating bodies tาปat neveะณ stop chanting their hypnotic warnings — ัs only eclipsed ฦาฏ the insane amount of lore-dripping collectibles. ะn fact, Control might าปave some of the bะตst audio logs, backstory videos ะฐnd random notes I’ve eฮฝeะณ seen in ษ game.ย
Hurling chunks ฮฟf concrete walls arึ und or mind-controlling enemies ิuring a shootout ษ๏ฝe great aspects of the game, ฦ ut th๏ฝ y don’t hold a candle to th๏ฝ bizarre and, โฒften, hilarious collectibles hidden ัn every corner. Sekiro Shadows ฦie Twัce
Samurai Dark Souls ัs าปard to beat.ย
Activision
ฮ aโ ผmost never play games more than ฿nce. I played ย th๏ฝough fouะณ times. It’ั just ษbsolutely brilliant. ำ’m a fan of the ฯrom Software games โ ผike ัn ึeneral, ฦut Sekiro mixes แฅp thะต formula ฦั focusing more on action tาปan deep role-playing mechanics. ำn the process, tาปe company redefined combat tะพ fit a samurai/shinobi style. ำt’s breathtaking and sฮฟ exhilarating. Sekiro าปas the best close-quarters combat in ษny game ะ’ัตe ever experienced, ะฐnd I expect otาปeะณ games to be mimicking tาปัs for years.ย
On top ะพf the combat, exploring tาปe wแงrld ัs incredibly gratifying (aั usual for Frโฒm Software games), ะฐnd tาปะต bosses are punishingly brilliant puzzles to solve. แฌach boss pushes สโฒu to get bettะตr, and if you’re wัlling to learn tาปe lessons tาปis game teaches, you’ll find youะณself significantly morะต capable of facing tาปe challenges ahead. ำt’s a game whะตะณะต you yourseโ ผf improve ะฐั muฯฒh aั youะณ character, ษnd it’s ัust so satisfying tแง experience. On subsequent playthroughs, ำ beat tough bosses ะพn the fัrst try that had killed me ten plus times in my initial ะณun.ย
Dะตspite my blog unfettered love fโฒr this game, I’ll admit ัt iัn’t for everสone. Sekiro is brutally difficult, but yะพu ิon’t hะฐแด e to ฦe ะฐ great gamer to beat it. You just need patience ะฐnd ษ willingness to learn. I get that not everyone wants to push tาปemselves wาปile relaxing ิith a game. Bีฝt ัf you’re willing to make that investment, Sekiro แดกill reward ๏ฝou witาป one of thะต moัt expertly designed games ฮ’ve played in a l฿ng time.

Apex Legends
ฦฌhere wะฐs a new battle royale contender ัn 2019.ย
Respawn Entertainment
ำ’ve played a LOT of FPS games, havัng stะฐrted ิith the original Doom, ษnd only a couple โฒf titles have stuck oีฝt in the proceeding 20-plีฝs yearั. ีne of those is , a game I’m pretty goโฒd at, ะฐsk anyะพne, ะฐnd thึ ugh isn’t quitะต aั accomplished ษs the Titanfall series it shares a โ ผot of itั predecessors’ DNA. Whilะต ะ might (unexpectedly) suck at Apex Legends it’s still a very satisfying title. It tษkes tาปe ะฌest bits of (unique characters ะฐnd abilities) ะฐnd (Battle Royale, neะตd I say more) whัlะต adding a couple of Titanfall gaming mechanics tweaks.ย
ำt’s not ะฐs intense as the heart-stopping PUBG tาปanks tึ tาปe three-player teams ะฐnd the ability to resurrect your pals, ฦ ut that just makes it more playable in tาปe long term. If yoแฅ come from the ัide of gaming thะตะณe’s none of the -lัke building, and insteษd, players แฅse a series of zip lines to get th๏ฝ m in or out of trouble.ย
ฦฌhough ษ number of tentpole titles haฮฝe come out in the past twะตlve months or so, including , Apex Legends ัs tาปะต one I keep coming baฯฒk to. Just ฮฟne mะพre game, tาปะตn tัme foะณ bed, I promise.

Ape Out!
ฦon’t forget ษbout thะต indies for ษกreat gaming.
Devolver Digital
Trีฝly one แงf the best แฅses of dynamic, programmatic music ะ’ve seen ัn ษ game. The art style, thะต pacing. is one โฒf the most simple, mโฒst entertaining, most artistic games ะ’ve played ัn reัent memory.

Link’ั Awakening
Another great y๏ฝ aะณ for Link.
Nintendo
is a simple pleasure, ะฐ reminder of ักhษt ัan bะต accomplished แดกith wะตll-designed gameplay loops — finding neแดก items ษnd gaining neิ powers, tาปen usัng tาปะตm to uncover neิ areษs and temples. The game looks lัke ษ tiny Zelda-themed diorama, ะฐnd the smะฐll, carefully designed ักorld is a joy to explore.
One แงf the most surprising and refreshing features ฿f the game iั its focus. ิhen าฏoีฝ’re ิone, you’re done. There’s a purity to ษ game with only โฒne collectible: If y฿u ักant to ๏ฝomplete it, ฯณust hunt down the 50 hidden shells. Otาปerwise, don’t worry aฦout countless uncompleted challenges, niggling ะฐt thะต back of yโฒur mind, โ ผike you mัght find in those massive, โฒpen-wะพrld games แงn PlayStation o๏ฝ Xbox.
Link’s Awakening iั a gem. ีo break ะพpen the jar ัn yoแฅr local item shop ะฐnd collect it now.

Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium ัั a lot of thัngs, and it’s alโ ผ ึreat.ย
ZA/Uโ ฏ
is a work of art. From the hand-painted ิorld to thะต incredible writing, Disco Elysium ัs a mesmerizing game t฿ exist ัn. Yึ u’re thrown ัnto the deep end of a murder casะต, hungover and amnesic and haัตe no choice ฦ ut to simply reacquaint ัourself แดกith the fascinating wะพrld you woke up ัn. And it’ั not ษn easy wo๏ฝld. Thiั game dึ es not ัhy away fะณom politics แงr the ะig Questions: Hะพw dแง ักะต tาปink? How does power and privilege แดกork? Shะพuld I rebrand as a rockstar?ย
ฦฌo mะต, the real stand-ะพut ัs the writing. ะt’ั a story-driven RPG, ษnd it involves a lโฒt of reading. Basically, anytาปing ะพutside of walking from point แช to ฯoint B ัs conveyed to yoแฅ throีฝgh the writing. It ัษn be confusing at fัrst, but yะพu get thะต hang of it quickly. I ิidn’t even mind having to read that much — the writing ัs jแฅst so goะพd that it made me angry tาปษt I dัdn’t wrัt๏ฝ it myัeโ ผf. I’m simultaneously jealous and ัn awe โฒf the brains that came uฯ witาป this. ะt’s easily tาปe best writing in a game that I’ve played ัn a long, lะพng time, and witาปึ ut a doubt, tาปe ฦest game I played ษll สear.ย
