6 ball 6 six record

Power Hitting Prowess: When 6 Sixes in an Over Lit Up the IPL

In cricket, we have often seen a bowler dominating with a hat-trick ball, leading their team towards victory. Similarly, there are many times when a batsman can hog the limelight by sending all balls over the boundary for six runs in an over.

Undoubtedly, it is the dream of every batsman to hit half a dozen sixes in an over. Well, 6 ball 6 six is not something easy to achieve, which is the reason why not many batsmen have been able to do so.

There have been only four batsmen who have been able to achieve their dream of hitting a bowler 6 sixes in an over. In this blog, we will explore who these batters are who have achieved this remarkable accomplishment, etching their names in history.

We are sure you must be curious to know about them, so let’s not waste any time and begin with the blog.

6-balls 6-sixes: Which Batsmen Achieved It?

Here is the 6 ball 6 six record list that you have been waiting for, including batters from South Africa, India, the West Indies and the USA.

  • Herschelle Gibbs vs. Netherlands

For the very first time in international cricket that a batter shocked everyone by smashing the balls for 6 sixes in an over. Gibbs, batter of the South African team, did this in International cricket for the first time in 2007. He is the first player to achieve this splendid feat, which he did against the Netherlands in the ODI World Cup.

The unfortunate bowler in whose over Gibbs hit 6 sixes was Daan van Bunge, who was delivering the 30th over; little did he know that it would become a memorable event in cricket history, which will be remembered and appreciated always.

  • Yuvraj Singh vs. England

Somewhere in the wake of Gibbs’s exploits, Yuvraj Singh joined the select group of people who had heaved six balls six sixes, and that was months later.

Yuvraj hasn’t been so lucky as to have had that record with a pinch on the other side now and then. Perhaps influencing his achievement was that this event took place in Durban during the fledgling T20 World Cup of 2007 against England, the bowler being the prime English fast bowler of the time, Stuart Broad.

  • Kieron Pollard vs Sri Lanka

After Gibbs and Singh’s remarkable exploits proving that it could be done, a further staggering 14 years elapsed before anybody made this exclusive list again. The record was made once again in the history of international cricket in 2021 by Kieron Pollard. The explosive West Indies batter is known for his power hitting in international cricket as well as in leagues like the IPL. He got the record in his name in a home game which his team was playing against Sri Lanka.

  • Jaskaran Malhotra vs Papua New Guinea

Jaskaran Malhotra, a USA cricketer, smashed Gaudi Toka from Papua New Guinea for a stunning 36 runs in just an over by hitting all 6 six balls out of the boundary in the last over.

Six sixes in an over creates pure excitement throughout all cricket stadiums yet this record has never been completed during the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) history.

In the IPL history batsmen have knocked numerous sixes in an over going beyond five however the legendary sixth maximum has never been achieved.

The aim to hit six consecutive sixes in an over has generated remarkable excitement throughout the IPL even though complete success happened only occasionally.

Chris Gayle displayed his power during his game against Rahul Sharma in 2012 by hitting five sixes in a row for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors India at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Rahul Tewatia blasted Cottrell from Kings XI Punjab entirely during his Rajasthan Royals match when he delivered five massive sixes in a single over which produced the turning point of the match and became known as an all-time high success in IPL history.
Ravindra Jadeja destroyed Harshal Patel in the 19th over of 2021 by launching five sixes as well as two fours and two sixes which allowed him to score 37 runs in a single over during Chennai Super Kings versus Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Rinku Singh created a sports history in Kolkata Knight Riders’ match against Gujarat Titans after hitting a phenomenal five consecutive sixes to pull off a miracle victory when his team needed 29 runs in the last over of the game.
These remarkable power hits from the cricket field failed to produce six sixes but they became legendary moments that spread through IPL fans and highlighted the unpredictable nature of this league.

In different cricket formats the achievement of hitting six sixes in an over has already been accomplished.

In 1968 first-class cricket saw its initial occurrence when Sir Garfield Sobers accomplished this feat.
In 1985 Ravi Shastri joined Garfield Sobers with this first-class six sixes achievement.
Herschelle Gibbs achieved the first six sixes over success during the 2007 World Cup One Day International cricket matches.
The accomplishment came during Yuvraj Singh’s Twenty20 International appearance against England which took place in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
Kieron Pollard also hit six sixes in a T20I against Sri Lanka in 2021.
The ex-IPL player Thisara Perera became the most recent player to accomplish six sixes in the Asian Legends League match of March 2025.
When a player achieves six sixes in a single over during an IPL match it will create a landmark moment in the tournament history that will burnishing the game of cricket worldwide.
